Bio
At JMU: Fifth-year Duke who is steady and who is expected to play a key LB role after having his best spring practice period in 2004, said LB coach Kyle Gillenwater… starter for much of the last two seasons.
2003: Started JMU’s first five games and seven times overall… sixth on the team in tackles and had 2.5 stops for loss, four forced fumbles and a QB hurry… had three games with 10 or more tackles… had 12 stops (eight primary) and a forced fumble at Virginia Tech… had 10 primary stops and a forced fumble at Massachusetts… had 12 tackles (seven primary) and forced two fumbles at New Hampshire… took part in nine stops (1.5 for loss) vs. Hofstra… had an interception on the game’s first series to set up a TD vs. Charleston Southern.
2002: Starter throughout the year and JMU’s top tackler… had 10 tackles for loss… had 10 or more tackles in six of 12 games, including each of JMU’s last five… had a team- and career-high 15 tackles (seven primary) vs. Villanova… scored on an 80-yard return of a blocked field goal try vs. Villanova… had 13 stops vs. Richmond, Rhode Island (team high), and William & Mary, 12 at Northeastern, and 10 vs. Massachusetts… had 10 primary stops at Rhode Island, nine at Richmond and Northeastern, and eight vs. William & Mary… had a sack and an interception at Rhode Island and fumble recoveries vs. New Hampshire and Delaware.
2001: Played in each JMU game… had a season-high five tackles at Villanova and two vs. Elon and Massachusetts… had three primary stops, a tackle for loss and a 34-yard interception return to set up the tying TD at the end of regulation at Villanova… returned a blocked punt 11 yards for TD vs. Elon in his first JMU game… moved to LB during 2001 spring practice.
High School: Played on two district title teams at Central-Lunenburg and was a starter at CB in the state all-star game after his senior year… as a senior was first-team all-district at QB and second-team at DB, second-team all-region at QB, and his football team's MVP… second-team all-district at QB and DB as a junior… his basketball team's MVP and an all-district forward as a senior… all-state as a 300-meter hurdler.
Personal: Arthur Townsend III… born July 12, 1982… finance major… enrolled in JMU’s kinesiology master’s program with an athletic administration and coaching concentration… represented JMU at an NCAA student leadership conference… received a Virginia High School League academic excellence award and an All-American Scholar award… listed among Who's Who Among American High School Students and attended Boys’ State… A-10 academic honoree.
